Tola Wewe, born in 1959 in Okitipupa, Ondo State, is a renowned Nigerian contemporary artist celebrated for his deep engagement with Yoruba cultural heritage. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1983 and later obtained a Master’s degree in African Visual Arts from the University of Ibadan in 1986.
He is one of the founding members of the Ona movement, a collective of artists dedicated to reinterpreting Yoruba artistic traditions through contemporary expression. His work is deeply rooted in Yoruba folklore, mythology, and traditional Ona symbols, which he seamlessly blends with European artistic influences to create a unique and compelling visual style.
Beyond his contributions to the art world, Wewe also played a significant role in cultural administration, serving as the Commissioner for Tourism and Culture in Ondo State during part of Olusegun Mimiko's tenure. His artwork has been exhibited widely in Nigeria and internationally, with pieces housed in esteemed private and public collections.
Through his distinctive approach to art, Wewe continues to celebrate and reimagine Yoruba heritage, cementing his legacy as a leading figure in contemporary African art.
